About Us

West Australian Owned and Operated

Established in 1998, West Coast Rewind is a West Australian owned and operated company that specialises in the rewind and maintenance of electric motors.

Our modern workshop facilities in Malaga is maintained by highly qualified trade professionals with many years of experience across five continents, all their work is carried out in accordance with AS4307.1-95 and EASA (The Electro-Mechanical Authority).

Our investment in state of the art non-destructive testing equipment enables us to evaluate the condition of a windings by measuring very fine resistance measurements, impedance, phase angles, inductance and capacitance of motor windings enabling them to diagnose the early turn to turn breakdown of insulation.

We also perform high voltage testing to measure dielectric absorption ratios and polarization index to evaluate the condition of the slot insulation to ground and between phases.

All work is done to the highest standards using only the best quality parts and materials and our motors are, if anything over engineered.

West Coast Rewind stands for quality, service and price. We can provide faster turn-around time and more cost-effective service with a personalized approach through our fully equipped workshop and qualified and experienced team. We also provide a 12-month workmanship warranty on all our motors.

What We Do

WCRT Specialised Application Motors are severe duty premium electric motors, specifically designed and built for long service life and resistance to premature failures.

All electrical production and assembly of our motors is completed in our West Australian facility, utilizing the latest technology and practices.

The electrical insulation materials industry is constantly evolving, with new and formerly expensive products becoming more viable options’ WCRT is at the forefront of utilization and inception of these materials.

Our premium severe duty 1000V motors have been development for the Australian underground environment, to resist premature failures resulting from environmental factors including voltage surges and spikes, which are not uncommon place in installations such as 1000V secondary ventilation systems and installations utilizing variable speed drives (VSD).

There are four basic stresses that act on a stator winding contributing to its longevity: Thermal, Mechanical, Dielectric and Environmental. Following is a summarization of the added strengths and features of WCRT severe duty wound motors to oppose these stresses.

Severe Duty Motors & Winding

West Coast Rewind’s severe duty motors and rewinds have been specifically designed to resist premature failures in harsh conditions. Many early failures in induction motors occur as the result of environmental factors including voltage surges and spikes, which are not uncommon in installations such as 1000V secondary ventilation systems and installations utilizing variable speed drives (VSD).

A voltage surge or spike can be triggered by a number of factors and the route cause can be extremely difficult to isolate. These spikes are usually the result of discharge (frequent on long cable runs), switching power circuits, faulty switch equipment and connections, lightning, solid state power devices or transient voltages.

West Coast Rewind Pty Ltd employs experienced trades people with over 200 years combined experience spanning over 30 years. This experience coupled with the extensive knowledge that comes from specialising in rewinding 1000 Volt motors has contributed to West Coast Rewind’s high performing product.

Severy Duty Motors & Winding

During operation, there are four main stresses acting on a stator’s windings as a result of voltage surge that affect its durability:

Thermal

Mechanical

\

Dielectrical

Environmental

A combination of protection methods is applied by the team at West Coast Rewind when winding high voltage motors in order to reduce the effects of these stresses including:

  • Superior spike resistant magnet wire
  • Use of H Class fibre slot wedges
  • Reinforcing slot
  • Reinforcing phase insulation
  • Insulating the first turn of each phase
  • Tried and proven varnishing technique
  • Employing experienced tradespeople
  • Modern winding and testing equipment
  • Utilising only reputable bearings and parts
  • Using quality coils made from superior material
  • Using advanced winding techniques to minimise cross over
  • Installing fit for purpose grease that offers enhanced wear protection and a long grease life
Spike Resistant Magnet Wire

Spike Resistant Magnet Wire

Only superior quality, spike resistant magnet wire is used at West Coast Rewind. This wire has been specifically manufactured to withstand high electrical stress and increase the lifespan of any motor.

The combination of a nano-modified base coat and high-performance topcoat provides high thermal stability and mechanical resistance.

H Class Fiber Slot Wedges

H Class Fiber Slot Wedges

H Class (180 degree) Fiberglass Slot Wedges are installed in ever motor rewound at West Coast Rewinds.

Using fiberglass slot wedges, rather than timber, offers greater mechanical resistance within the laminations in addition to enhanced electrical and thermal protection for the windings.

Reinforced slot insulation

Reinforced Slot Insulation

The utilization of double H Class (180 degree) slot liners in our motors drastically improves the dielectric strength of the insulation system.

Installing the additional slot insulation greatly increases the mechanical barrier and improves the strength between the conductors, greatly improving a motor’s resistance to ground faults.

Extra Phase Insulation

Extra Phase Insulation

Extending the ‘in-between slot insulation’ (H Class) guarantees 100% insulation between phases. The thickness of this insulation and the phase insulation is also increased to provide higher dielectric resistance between coils and phases.

West Coast Rewind Pty Ltd will ensure that the first turn of each phase group is fully insulated with high voltage sleeving. This increases the dielectric strength of the most susceptible area to a level that can withstand most spikes or surges.

Proven Varnishing Technique

Proven Varnishing Technique

It is often suggested that a vacuum pressure impregnated motor is the ideal varnishing method for motor windings. Whilst this may give good penetration of the varnish into the windings, we have discovered that this will leave a thin external coating leaving the windings susceptible to damage. Submersion varnishing greatly improves mechanical and dielectrical strength leaving a thick layer to combat early deterioration caused by environmental stresses. The severe duty varnishing is a two-step process.

Firstly, the winding is heated and submerged in varnish for better penetration. Once cured, the motor is submerged a second time to thicken the varnish coat giving the winding additional mechanical strength which prolongs the integrity of the whole insulation system.

Combining these proven techniques when winding new and overhauled motors will increase the maximum operating life of each motor, even in the harshest of conditions. If you would like further information on a new motor or rewinding a pre-owned motor, call the expert team from West Coast Rewind.
